Summary: This position manages the Packaging Development team including; setting the direction and expectations for team performance, using independent judgment to identifying strategic improvement opportunities for the company, and clearly planning and prioritizing work. The position requires a high level of technical competency in packaging technology including but not limited to flexible films, thermoform resins/process, and paperboard. Additionally the position requires that the candidate have a solid working knowledge/experience driving projects that integrate packaging material and machinery interactions. The position demands an individual that can manage cross functional teams with marketing, supply chain, legal, regulatory, etc. to help successfully guide/deliver multiple programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct the Packaging Development team in support of strategic growth and maintenance projects; provide clear direction and help establish team priorities based on the BAF strategic goals and business needs as identified by Marketing and Innovation & Insights.

Leverage technical packaging expertise to identify, develop and implement new/novel packaging technologies with emphasis on retail trends and innovation. Lead packaging technology screening to assess commercial value and develop KPI's and timelines.

Collaborate with the innovation team, product development, operations, engineering and procurement to develop a network asset & materials strategy linked to future state packaging structure/format designs delivering flexible manufacturing platforms and affordable designs.

Lead innovation projects by translating and identifying technology needs to better enable the execution of the innovation pipeline; develop packaging solutions for innovation projects as needed. Manage packaging supplier relationships to optimize process structure, design requirements, and quality.

Oversee the development of packaging material specifications, palletizing specifications, and packaging operating specifications and initiate specifications for new development. Lead team during graphics conversion projects by facilitating cross functional communication.

Manage packaging materials optimization and cost reduction. Author, coordinate and oversee packaging test requests. Provide technical support to Marketing, Sales, Technology and Operations teams in troubleshooting and solving packaging material performance problems. On capital projects ensure packaging materials and machinery is compatible.

Education and/or Experience

BS in Packaging Science/Engineering, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 10 years' experience with a minimum of 8 years in the food industry and 3-5 years supervisory experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Membership in Institute of Packaging Professionals preferred

Membership in the Association for Manufacturing Excellence preferred



Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Design software; Development software; Internet software; Inventory software; Project Management software; Spreadsheet software, TOPS Engineering software and Word Processing software.

Other Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of package conversion processes and technologies.

Knowledge of package graphics and printing processes.

Practical knowledge of packaging development practices and packaging substrates including rigid and flexible plastic, fiberboard, paper, corrugated.

Other Qualifications

Travel 20-50% of the time.
